South Korean pop star Psy and the video for his single ‘Gangnam Style’ is all time high by view rating on Youtube after it was uploaded 2 years ago with 2 billion views.
On Friday, ‘Gangnam Style’ set the record as the first YouTube video to pass 2 billion views, just seventeen months after becoming the first video to reach 1 billion views. The record was achieved after it was reported that 100 million people had watched the video in 2014 alone. That second billion took three times longer than the first, which was achieved just 159 days from the video’s release on July 15th, 2012. The second place video on YouTube is still the music video that “Gangnam Style dethroned: Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” which has just half the number of views as “Gangnam Style.”
Google’s joined in on the celebration with a cute little easter egg just for the occasion. In a statement released by the larger-than-life singer, he said: “2 billion views…they are very honorable and very burdensome numbers. “With appreciation, I will come back soon with more joyful contents!!”
In 2013, Psy’s follow up to ‘Gangnam Style’, ‘Gentleman’, received the most views for any YouTube video in one day, when it attracted 28 million viewers in its first 24 hours – it is currently ranked at 7 in the all-time most viewed YouTube videos. While there has not been too much action from him of late, the “King of YouTube” has promised a new album this year.
To celebrate the occasion, developers at YouTube produced special animations of Psy carrying out his distinctive ‘Gangnam Style’ dance routine.
