Botswana stands out in Africa with its impressive mobile penetration rates, yet it faces hurdles in terms of slow internet speeds and high data costs. The sector’s robust performance during the lockdown is credited to widespread demand for data services and internet access across all economic sectors.
However, it’s important to highlight the significant influence of the pandemic on mobile phone sales within the country, especially considering the decrease in household incomes. The expansion of this sector encounters challenges, with a key issue being the restricted availability of broadband infrastructure. To address this, the government has committed to enhancing broadband accessibility and internet connectivity, extending these services to schools, libraries, health centers, and the community.
Today, Liquid Intelligent Technologies revealed its launch of the Metro Ring in Gaborone, Botswana. This technology group with a Pan-African presence is introducing a robust telecommunication network named Metro Ring, known for its high capacity, speed, and security. The network’s goal is to empower local businesses, thereby contributing significantly to the economic advancement of Botswana.
The Metro Ring project will be introduced in two stages, with the primary phase set to benefit numerous businesses. Additionally, the second phase is expected to expand connections further, fostering continued growth and accessibility.
The launch of the first phase will reduce tariffs for local and international data products, making it more accessible to small and medium businesses that have previously been disadvantaged as compared to the larger enterprises.

Metro Ring’s impact extends beyond empowering local businesses in Botswana’s economic growth. It will also help the African nation achieve the following;
- Government Support: The project aligns with Botswana Vision 2036, the government’s strategic plan to elevate the country’s economic status to high-income within the next 13 years.
- Digital Transformation: The Metro Ring will accelerate the digital transformation journeys of local businesses.
- Realising Potential: It aligns with Botswana’s aspirations to become a prominent economic hub in Africa.
- Economic Boost: The project is expected to create job opportunities and contribute to the overall development and expansion of the national economy.
- Meeting Internet Demand: The initiative addresses the challenge of high demand for high-speed internet services.
- Crucial Network: Liquid’s Metro Ring, with its extensive and efficient telecommunication network, is a vital factor in the region’s growth and expansion plan.

The Metro Ring stands as a remarkable accomplishment in Gaborone’s telecommunications infrastructure. It demonstrates the effective partnership between the public and private sectors to advance technology in Botswana’s favour.
The Pan-African technology group, in March, revealed the completion of its comprehensive business transformation. This transformation shifts the company from solely being a telecommunications and digital services provider to becoming a comprehensive one-stop-shop technology group. This change was achieved through a comprehensive rebranding effort that encompasses the entire group.
The same month, it made an announcement about acquiring Cysiv MEA, previously known as SecureMisr, a company based in Egypt. This move is aimed at expanding its operations into the Middle East and Africa regions.
