Google Cloud to launch new cloud region in Saudi Arabia amid controversy

Google Cloud is set to inaugurate its new cloud region in Saudi Arabia, marking a notable development in the company’s commitment to fostering digital transformation in the Kingdom.

Anthony Cirot, Google Cloud’s EMEA South VP, expressed enthusiasm for the launch, emphasising the region’s role in empowering businesses, supporting innovation, and providing low-latency, high-performance access to cloud computing services.

The launch event for the new cloud region in Saudi Arabia is scheduled for November 15, showcasing Google Cloud’s dedication to advancing digital capabilities in the country. The event invites businesses to leverage faster and more secure cloud infrastructure for data-driven decisions, innovation, and scalable customer service.

Since early 2018, Google has been in talks with Saudi oil firm Aramco for a data center joint venture, with official plans for a Google Cloud Platform (GCP) region in Saudi Arabia announced in late 2020. The region will be based in Dammam and operated in partnership with Aramco, the world’s largest producer of oil.

Notably, Google’s partnership with Aramco has faced criticism for contradicting the company’s carbon goals by supporting an oil company. Human rights groups have also expressed concerns, urging Google to cancel the project due to Saudi Arabia’s documented record of illegal surveillance and torture of dissidents.

Oracle, a Google competitor, already has a cloud region in Jeddah since 2020, with two more regions planned for Riyadh and Neom City. Huawei announced plans for a cloud region in Saudi Arabia last year, and Microsoft is also preparing for an Azure cloud region in the country.

In addition to Saudi Arabia, Google has expanded its cloud presence globally, with recent launches in Doha, Qatar, and Tel Aviv, Israel, while planning another in Kuwait.

How Google can position itself for market dominance

As Google prepares to face rivals in the Saudi cloud market. there’s need to position itself favourably in oder to achieve dominance. The company should emphasise its commitment to environmental sustainability and ethical considerations, addressing concerns raised by its partnership with Aramco. Communicating a clear strategy for ensuring responsible business practices and showcasing the unique features and capabilities of its cloud region in Saudi Arabia will be crucial.

Furthermore, Google can differentiate itself by highlighting its global expertise, innovative technologies, and a comprehensive suite of cloud computing services. Engaging with local businesses and stakeholders, while providing reliable and scalable solutions, will contribute to Google’s success in establishing itself as a trusted and preferred cloud service provider in the region.
