Meta-owned WhatsApp is said to be developing a new feature that lets users lock individual private chats, enhancing privacy and keeping conversations secure from prying eyes. Although the app already offers the option to lock itself, it doesn’t provide chat-specific locks.
The new feature, called “Chat Lock,” was discovered in the latest WhatsApp Beta for Android version on the Google Play Store by well-known WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo.
According to the report, this upcoming feature will enable users to secure individual chats using fingerprints or passcodes, which will be accessible within the chat’s contact or group info.
By introducing this feature, WhatsApp aims to bolster the existing security options provided to users, further enhancing privacy. The feature will also help protect confidential and sensitive information from being exposed.
Moreover, the media files shared in locked chats, such as photos, videos, and audio files, will not be automatically saved in the phone gallery, offering an additional layer of privacy.
Users will be able to view locked chats in a separate section, making it nearly impossible for anyone to access these conversations without the user’s fingerprint or passcode. The report states that the feature will be available for both private and group chats.
However, WABetaInfo points out a potential drawback to the “Lock Chat” feature. If someone tries to access your phone and fails to provide the necessary authentication, they may be prompted to clear the chat history to unlock your device. This could put users at risk of losing their chat history if someone forcefully attempts to bypass their locked chat.
As the feature is still under development, it is unclear how it will be implemented. WhatsApp is expected to test the feature on beta versions for Android and iOS in the near future.
