Whatsapp has now added strong end-to-end encryption to is Android apps. The encryption support is provided by a secure messaging company, Open WhisperSystems who announced that they helped incorporate the encryption into the messaging app. The feature is turned on by default and most users might be using the feature without knowing.
The end-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and recipient of messages get to see the message (assuming there is no hidden vulnerability, of course). Whatsapp and its parent company, Facebook will be unable to read users messages in transit anymore and neither will any security agency.
Encryption has been one of the most popular feature of rival messaging app, Blackberry Messenger and even Apple’s iMessage, but this Whatsapp version boasts to be even more secure as it’s possible for Apple to change encryption keys so it could be able to read messages in transit, and BlackBerry has the power to peek at your messages whereas with Whatsapp, that can’t happen. Open WhisperSystems wrote on their blog that it will take a while before the encryption feature rolls out to other versions of the app on other platforms
