TNM Launches “SIM Swap Exemption” to Fight Mobile Money Fraud in Malawi

TNM Plc, Malawi’s leading mobile network and ICT services provider, is making significant strides to combat mobile money fraud through the introduction of its new ‘SIM Swap Exemption’ security initiative. This feature gives TNM customers the ability to block any unauthorized SIM swaps on their mobile accounts, a common tactic utilized by fraudsters to gain illegal access to mobile money funds.

“At TNM, we understand the critical importance of customer security, especially in an era where reliance on mobile money platforms like Mpamba is rapidly expanding,” stated Madalitso Jonazi, Head of Brand and Marketing at TNM. “The SIM Swap Exemption feature is an essential part of our commitment to financial inclusion as it directly empowers customers to protect their hard-earned money from fraud.”

Jonazi highlighted the increasing sophistication of digital money fraudster operations and their detrimental impact on public trust in mobile financial services. Fraudsters often employ SIM swapping tactics to steal customer credentials and illegally siphon funds from mobile money accounts. TNM’s new security measure aims to break this chain and restore user confidence in Mpamba.

    How It Works

TNM customers have two ways to activate the SIM Swap Exemption:

    • USSD Code: Dialing the code *7777# provides customers with a user-friendly menu through which they can permanently disable the SIM swap function on their mobile line.
    • TNM Smart App: The feature is conveniently accessible through the TNM Smart App, offering another path for customers to safeguard their accounts.

Beyond Security: Driving Mobile Money Usage

TNM’s efforts in fighting fraud extend beyond just enhanced security features. The company is actively engaged in educational initiatives and raising awareness among its customers about common fraud tactics to promote responsible mobile money usage. Jonazi emphasized that the SIM Swap Exemption, coupled with heightened user awareness, will contribute significantly towards driving the safe adoption and growth of Mpamba and its benefits in the nation.
