It is unimaginable but true. Who would have thought that Google with all its services – Maps, Translate, Photos, Flights, Books and more – would ever be dethroned? Well, Google has been relegated to 2nd place as the most popular domain and it had to be TikTok.
According to tech-security company Cloudflare in a new report, Google was the most popular domain in 2020 while TikTok ended up at the 7th position. However TikTok started its rise on the ranking table in 2021 as the social video app exploded in popularity during the pandemic, hitting 1 billion monthly active users in September 2021. Then in 2021, TikTok got to the top spot for a day, precisely on the 17th of February 2021. It stayed on the number one position in March and May for a couple of days. It then took the lead as from August 10, 2021 with Google just having some days . “October and November were mostly TikTok’s days, including on Thanksgiving (November 25) and Black Friday (November 26).”
