Notion, which launched its calendar based on Cron last month, may soon introduce more privacy-centric features in its productivity suite. The company disclosed today that it has acquired Skiff, a platform providing end-to-end encrypted services for file storage, documents, calendar events, and email.
Skiff was founded in 2020 by Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg, and has raised $14.2 million in two funding rounds. Its investors include Sequoia Capital, as well as Alphabet Chairman John Hennessy, former Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang, Eventbrite co-founders Julia and Kevin Hartz, Balaji Srinivasan, and re–Inc founder Jenny Wang.
Notion’s COO, Akshay Kothari, revealed in a conversation with the co-founders posted on the Notion blog that Notion had been following Skiff’s work closely. He expressed his admiration for Skiff’s attention to detail in their products, which began as a secure alternative to Google Docs and later diversified to include other productivity solutions such as calendars and emails.
Skiff has confirmed on its website that it is merging with Notion, and also stated on a support page that it will discontinue its products six months after the merger. It clarified that Skiff user accounts will not be automatically converted into Notion accounts, but users can easily migrate or export their data to other platforms.
Notion’s last acquisition took place in 2022 when it acquired workflow management tool Flowdash. The company had previously acquired Cron and India-based Automate.io, which had developed integrations with around 200 services.
