NITDA Charts a Two-Pronged Path for Responsible AI Adoption in Nigeria

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is spearheading Nigeria’s foray into the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with a two-fold approach emphasising both adoption and ethical implementation. This strategy was outlined by Kashifu Inuwa, NITDA’s Director General, at the recent Technovate Fest 2024, themed “AI for Africa: Addressing Continental Challenges and Driving Sustainable Innovations.”

Inuwa highlighted the agency’s commitment to promoting AI adoption across various sectors while ensuring its responsible and ethical use. This dual focus reflects a growing awareness of the transformative potential of AI, alongside the need to mitigate potential risks and ensure equitable access to its benefits.

“Our approach is twofold,” Inuwa explained. “First, we are investing in capacity building to ensure AI literacy permeates all sectors of society. Second, we are developing a robust regulatory framework to guide the ethical development and deployment of AI.”

This commitment to ethical AI aligns with NITDA’s previous advocacy for incorporating AI into Nigeria’s security framework. Eight months prior, the agency emphasized the potential of AI to enhance security outcomes, but stressed the importance of responsible implementation to avoid unintended consequences.

NITDA’s focus on capacity building involves initiatives to promote AI education and skills development across various levels, from grassroots to professionals. The agency is collaborating with educational institutions, research centers, and industry partners to create training programs, workshops, and resources that will equip Nigerians with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world.

Furthermore, NITDA is fostering an environment conducive to AI innovation. The agency is actively supporting startups, research initiatives, and public-private partnerships to drive the development and adoption of AI solutions that address local challenges. This includes initiatives like the National Centre for AI and Robotics (NCAIR), established to promote research and development in AI and robotics.

NITDA recognises the ethical considerations surrounding AI, particularly the potential for bias and discrimination. The agency is developing policies and guidelines to address these concerns, ensuring that AI systems are fair, transparent, and accountable. This includes promoting diversity and inclusion in the development and deployment of AI, ensuring that the technology serves all Nigerians equitably.

NITDA’s efforts align with a broader continental push for responsible AI adoption. The “AI for Africa” theme of Technovate Fest 2024 highlights the growing recognition of AI’s potential to address challenges and drive sustainable development across Africa.
