In a bid to revolutionise the international passport application process, the Nigerian government launched a new online portal for automated passport application in Abuja today. The new application process will make it convenient for applicants to book appointments, make payments and get a date for biometric data cpature from the comfort of their homes. The new system will also enable applicants track the progress of the application and know when the passport is ready for pick up
Present to officially launch the portal was the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. According to the Honourable Minister, the new process was implemented to reduce human interaction for Nigerians seeking international passports and ultimately the lengthy process. He emphasized that this innovative portal has successfully reduced the passport application request process to a mere six minutes, eliminating the need for individuals to physically visit immigration offices.
The Minister also mentioned that the objective of data harmonization has been successfully accomplished through the new process, thanks to its technical integration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
The portal, set to go live on Monday, January 8, 2024, will initially cater exclusively to applications from Nigerians residing within the country. Dr. Tunji-Ojo assured that, following a successful implementation in Nigeria, the portal will be extended globally. Additionally, he disclosed plans for the project’s second phase, slated for a March launch, which will introduce a contactless data verification system.
In concurrence, Mrs. Adepoju Carol Wura-Ola, the Comptroller General of NIS, affirmed that the new process is an outcome of the Service’s diligent efforts and determination.
Nigerian applicants opting for passports with a 5-year validity and 32 pages are required to pay ₦25,000, while those preferring passports with a 10-year validity and 64 pages must pay ₦70,000.
For overseas applicants, those seeking passports with a 5-year validity and 32 pages are to pay $130, and those desiring passports with a 10-year validity and 64 pages are to pay $230.
Getting a passport was once a confusing maze of unclear steps and endless waiting and it is expected that this new process will bring about a new change to the reputation of the Nigerian Immigration Service.
