Google has announced the release of Android 12L, a version of the Android operating system that is built to be used by devices that have large screens. The Tech giant claims the software comes with features that will make tablets and foldables simpler and easier to use.
Google built Android 12L (for bigger-screen devices) with the aim of making the user interface, multitasking improvements, and compatibility support better so apps would work better.
Speaking of benefits, Android 12L makes use of a device’s additional space to display Quick Settings and Notifications in a two-column style in the notification shade. Notifications and the clock are displayed on the lock screen, which similarly has a two-column design.
In addition, other built-in system applications, such as Settings, have been optimised for larger screen display, allowing users to make adjustments without having to navigate back and forth between sections. The placement of the PIN controls and the lock screen pattern has also been modified to make them simpler to reach on the left side of the screen.
Google says that Android 12L has a better home screen grid and a better fold-unfold transition for foldables.
12L also includes a new taskbar for launching and switching programs, as well as gesture navigation for recent apps, taskbar visibility, split-screen mode, and home. On Android 12L, users can now drag and drop apps into split-screen mode from the taskbar or use the new “Split” button in the overview. So you may watch a YouTube video while reading the news, searching the web with Chrome or using Google Maps. Although split-screen mode is not new, it is much easier to access in Android 12L and does not require developer opt-in.
Apps not intended for large-screen devices will benefit from 12L’s visual and stability improvements.
Google says that the OS will start to show up on Samsung, Lenovo, and Microsoft phones and tablets later this year.
