NBA Africa has announced the opening of applications for its startup accelerator program, Triple-Double, which is designed to support and empower early-stage African startups. The program will offer cash awards and additional forms of assistance to the selected participants.
The accelerator is managed by ALX Ventures, a technology incubator, and targets startups in Africa that are innovating in areas such as event management, ticketing, youth development, artificial intelligence, and digital marketing within the sports and creative sectors.
Triple-Double will select ten startups to join the program, where they will benefit from mentorship provided by professionals from NBA Africa, ALX, and other affiliated corporate entities. The mentors will offer expertise and advice, particularly in areas like product enhancement, business expansion, and strategies for market entry.
A key event of the program will be a demo day scheduled to take place in New York in September. During this event, the participating startups will have the opportunity to present their products to a panel comprised of industry experts from the United States, Africa, and other parts of the globe. Following these presentations, four startups will be chosen as winners.
The first-place winner will receive a cash prize of $50,000 and an additional $50,000 in in-kind support. The second, third, and fourth place winners will be awarded $40,000, $30,000, and $20,000 respectively, each in both cash and in-kind value.
Beyond the monetary prizes, the four top startups will also secure ongoing mentorship and the chance to collaborate with NBA Africa and the Basketball Africa League on existing and upcoming projects across the continent.
NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi expressed excitement about the launch of the accelerator, emphasizing its significance for the growth of the African sports ecosystem. Akamanzi highlighted the program’s innovative approach and its alignment with NBA Africa’s dedication to nurturing the future of sports on the continent.
Applications are open here until May 31.
