In a significant development for the telecommunications sector in South Sudan, MTN South Sudan has successfully secured a new operating license from the National Communication Authority. This license grants the company the right to operate within the country for an extended period of 15 years, despite the ongoing challenges posed by the current market conditions.
MTN has emphasized that this new license comes with critical obligations that will have a direct and positive impact on the citizens of South Sudan. The company views this as a pivotal opportunity to substantially enhance the quality of its services, expand network coverage to reach underserved communities, and stimulate genuine innovation within the digital landscape.
Furthermore, MTN articulated that this milestone marks a crucial advancement in aligning its operations with the evolving legal and regulatory framework of the country. This alignment will enable the company to strategically plan and invest in the necessary infrastructure and technologies that are essential for advancing connectivity in East Africa.
This announcement follows a recent statement by MTN Group’s president and CEO, Ralph Mupita, who expressed his concerns regarding the adverse effects of the ongoing civil war on the company’s operations. Mupita conveyed his hope for a swift restoration of peace, highlighting the severe challenges faced by the company due to the conflict between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Army. He noted that the civil war, which has persisted for nearly two years, has resulted in a significant loss of life and has displaced many individuals, including staff and customers.
“Our teams are primarily operating from Cairo, Egypt, to oversee the operations, as many of our staff and customers have been forced to leave their homes,” Mupita explained. Despite these difficulties, he acknowledged that the operation is currently experiencing some growth. He remains optimistic about the future, stating, “We continue to monitor the situation closely; we hope for an end to the conflict. This region holds substantial potential for growth, particularly in a peaceful environment.”
In response to the new operating license, MTN South Sudan’s CEO, Ali Monzer, remarked, “This milestone reaffirms our commitment to fostering national growth through technology and connectivity.” He reiterated MTN’s dedication to delivering valuable telecommunications, financial, and digital solutions that serve the needs of individuals, businesses, and communities throughout South Sudan.
“This license represents more than just a regulatory approval; it symbolizes our unwavering commitment to being a vital catalyst for economic and social development in South Sudan for the next 15 years and beyond,” MTN stated in its official communication.
