Just as it expanded NFT support to more people in 100 countries in Africa, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and the Americas, Meta Platform Inc. says it will now let users post their NFTs across both Instagram and Facebook.
In a Monday update to a May 10 blog post, the company announced the social media platform’s roughly 2.9 billion users would have the ability to share digital collectibles and NFTs.
Meta has been testing support for NFT “digital collectible” posts on Instagram since May, and if you’re among the expanding group of people with access, then you can now share posts with your blockchain-verified items on Facebook as well.
The NFT posts will feature “a shimmer effect” and can display public information, such as a description.” Meta tweeted an example of how the posts will look. According to the screenshot above, it looks like a normal post but has a badge that marks it as a “digital collectible.”
Meta had announced this in May, just before the NFT crash in June. Though the CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, did mention plans in March during SXSW, which at the time was just for Instagram.
Clearly the crypto downturn hasn’t scared off Meta, however. And it’s far from the only company to invest resources into NFTs specifically. In January, Twitter added support for NFTs as well. In that case, users could use the tokens as profile pictures.
While the NFT and blockchain markets may have taken a hit, the same is true for Meta, which has had a cruel summer of money-losing divisions, executive shake-ups, and slowed hiring — so maybe it’s actually the perfect pairing.
Connecting digital wallets to either Facebook or Instagram seems to be limited to the apps rather than through third-party browsers. However, expanding the reach of NFTs into each and every smartphone with one of Meta’s apps installed could result in additional earnings or adoption for the social media giant.
