Kenya targets leadership in Africa’s BPO sector with launch of digital hubs

Kenya is emerging as a leader in Africa’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector with the introduction of digital hubs throughout the country. This initiative is being implemented via the Jitume project, a government-led initiative which translates to ‘Send Yourself’ in Swahili.

The construction of these hubs is part of Kenya’s Digital Masterplan 2022-2032. This masterplan prescribes a systematic implementation of ICT infrastructure, services, and skill development across the country. It also presents a decade-long strategy for ICT projects, assisting investors in identifying their areas of focus.

The project aims to fast-track Kenya’s digital transformation by addressing 19 key initiatives. Over 40 Jitume Hubs have been launched so far, including two recently in the east-central district of Tindiret.

According to Eliud Owalo, the cabinet secretary for information, communications, and the digital economy, these hubs form a crucial part of the youth development strategy of President William Samoei Ruto and the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration, with a strong focus on digital skills and jobs.

Each Jitume center is typically equipped with up to 100 virtual desktop infrastructures equipped with broadband access. Owalo believes these centers will provide youths with access to global job opportunities and further strengthen Kenya’s BPO capabilities.

The BPO sector is seen as a key player in Africa’s economic recovery post the- COVID-19 pandemic, given its potential to generate employment opportunities in a continent with one of the highest unemployment rates in the world.

Kenya’s government anticipates that the Jitume initiative will benefit more than one million young people over the next three to five years.

Eng. John Tanui, the Permanent Secretary for ICT and digital economy, stated at the launch of the hub at the Tindiret Technical and Vocational College: “Our goal is to make Kenya a global leader in technology, top Business Process Outsourcing and IT-enabled services. We are empowering young people to leverage government infrastructure like free internet and Jitume ICT centers for the vast online work opportunities.”
