Did you know that you can ask ChatGPT questions on WhatsApp just like you’re talking to a friend? You can even call the chatbot using a U.S. or Canadian phone number.
Recently, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, introduced new features that allow users to interact with the chatbot through phone calls and WhatsApp messaging. The goal is to make the application more accessible, especially for those who may not have access to traditional internet-based platforms.
“You can talk to 1-800-ChatGPT for up to 30 minutes per month for free (U.S. and Canada only), with a daily limit on WhatsApp messages. We may adjust usage limits based on capacity if needed,” OpenAI stated in its report. This means that even without internet access, you can engage with ChatGPT for 30 minutes over the phone, providing a convenient way to interact with AI technology.

To start a chat on WhatsApp, simply follow these steps:
- Save ChatGPT’s phone number, +1 (800) 242-8478, as a contact in your phone.
- Open WhatsApp and search for ChatGPT in your contacts.
- Tap on the ChatGPT contact to start a chat.
- Ask ChatGPT your questions.
You can be sure that you are messaging ChatGPT on WhatsApp when you see the verified badge (see image on the right) in the chat.
“We do store and may review your calls, transcripts of calls, and WhatsApp messages with 1-800-ChatGPT for a limited time for safety and abuse prevention purposes,” OpenAI notes. If you use the popular ChatGPT application on your phone, your WhatsApp chats will be stored as part of your ChatGPT conversation history. “You can delete conversations, and cleared chats will be deleted from our systems within 30 days.” For now, your WhatsApp messages with the chatbot only have the “delete for me” option.
If you’re someone who prefers to use only a few apps on your smartphone, consider saving the chatbot as a contact. This allows you to chat with AI on WhatsApp and get answers to your questions or help with searches. Keep in mind that artificial intelligence is still under development, so it’s important to verify any information you receive from your new WhatsApp contact.
