The recent ban of the highly popular ClearURLs extension on the Google Chrome Web store has generated a lot of mixed reactions (mostly criticisms) on user forums like Reddit and Hacker News. The effect of this has generated counterintuitive measures on how the user can install the tool manually on his Chrome to reinforce the security of his data.
You will be able to install (or reinstall) the ClearURLs extension on your Chrome browser after following the steps below.
Set-up ‘ClearURLs’ extension manually on your Chrome Browser
Step 1: Download the latest version of ClearURLs directly from GitHub. Download and unzip the file (via WinRAR or the computer’s own file unzip).
Step 2: Open the Chrome browser, type “chrome: // extensions /” in the URL field and press “Enter”.
Step 3: Enable the “Developer Mode”. You will find this in the upper right corner on the extensions page.
Step 4: Once you have completed step 3 you can now pick the folder of the unpacked ClearURLs extension. Locate the folder where the file was unzipped and click on the “Select folder” option. ClearURLs is now installed in your Chrome browser.
NOTE: Once a newer version of the extension is released it won’t update automatically. You will have to download the updated file and copy it in the same folder as the older version. After this, you click on “Update” on the same Chrome extensions page, for the latest version of the tool to be activated.
