We did report this week that Meta-owned platform – Instagram – is planning to test a “Repost” fearure with a small number of people.
Well, a new finding by social media expert Matt Navarra confirms Instagram is now testing a new ‘Repost’ option, which would give users the ability to amplify any post by re-sharing it to their followers in the app.
A Meta-spokesperson also confirmed this to TechCrunch, saying, “We’re exploring the ability to reshare posts in Feed—similar to how you can reshare in Stories—so people can share what resonates with them, and so original creators are credited for their work.”
The above screenshot confirms a Repost tab will appear on users’ profiles alongside the posts, reels and tagged photos tabs.
The option to repost a post will be found in its share menu, and while reposting, users may also be able to add their own thoughts, similar to the quote tweet feature on Twitter, although this isn’t confirmed yet.
I have used popular Reposting apps on Instagram like Repost: For Instagram, Reposta, Repost for Instagram, Regrann and Reposter for Instagram: Download & Save.
The addition of a repost feature would get rid of the need for these third-party apps when it comes to resharing posts.
Reposts will allow you to send posts with your followers directly to their home feeds, instead of sharing shortcuts to these posts on their story.
Unlike for Stories that expires in 24 hours, reposts would remain on your followers’ feeds for as long as you want. “Reposts will be saved in a separated tab on your profile.”
Instagram is expected to test the feature soon with a limited number of users, which means it could be a while before you see reposts as a stable feature on most phones.
The idea of reposts on social media arguably originated from the “Retweet” feature on Twitter, which has since been adopted by other platforms.
For example, TikTok is currently testing its own version of Twitter’s retweet with the addition of a new “Repost” button that allows users to amplify videos on the platform by sharing them with their own followers.
But unlike a Twitter retweet, reposted videos on TikTok don’t show up on your own TikTok profile, as they’re only sent out to your friends’ “For You” feeds.
