Google is currently testing a new feature in Google Meet that allows users to generate virtual backgrounds using artificial intelligence (AI). During Meet calls, users may encounter a “Generate a background” prompt, which, upon selection, uses generative AI to create background images based on the user’s prompt.
This generative AI feature is part of Google Workspace Labs, an initiative that enables users to experiment with AI-assisted capabilities within Google products and provide valuable feedback.
The prompt invites users to specify their desired background, such as requesting an illustration of a magical forest, and the AI algorithm generates corresponding background images. This technology offers users a unique and customisable visual experience during their video calls.
As of now, the “Generate a background” prompt is available on desktop platforms. However, Google states that the feature is being gradually rolled out, so it may not be accessible to all users at this time.
For users who do not have access to the prompt, an alternative method is available. By opening a Google Meet call and clicking the “Apply Visual Effects” button, users can manually explore background generation options. They will have the choice of selecting from various options, including static backgrounds, animated visuals, custom images, and simple blur effects.
Many individuals have expressed a preference for Google Meet over other video conferencing platforms. Zoom’s user interface often falls short in terms of visual appeal, while Microsoft Teams is often considered too formal. In contrast, Google Meet offers an engaging and enjoyable experience with its vibrant atmosphere, complete with emoji reactions.
