Digitel has marked a significant milestone in South Sudan’s telecommunications history by being the first operator in the country to introduce a 5G network.
The company announced the launch of the new network, promising users an experience characterized by exceptionally fast speeds and unparalleled connectivity. This development positions Digitel as a pioneer in the South Sudanese telecom sector since its establishment in 2020 as the first mobile telecom company owned by citizens of South Sudan.
With a national population of just over 11 million, South Sudan hosts three main telecom providers: the homegrown Digitel, the South African giant MTN, and the Kuwait-based international firm Zain Telecom.
Digitel has articulated its founding mission as one focused on enhancing communication services and expanding the utilization of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) within South Sudan. In addition to the newly launched 5G services, Digitel provides a spectrum of other telecom services, including 2G, 3G, and 4G/LTE networks, as well as internet connectivity and mobile financial solutions.
The introduction of 5G by Digitel is expected to play a transformative role in the country’s technological landscape. Industry experts predict that 5G technology will be a catalyst for the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), leading to increased automation and efficiency, and subsequently improving the overall quality of life for the population.
Accenture, a leading global professional services company, highlights several advantages of 5G technology, including faster data transfer speeds, reduced latency, greater network capacity, and enhanced reliability. These benefits are anticipated to drive innovation and economic growth in South Sudan, propelling the nation forward in the digital age.
