Nigerian on-demand food delivery giant, Chowdeck, renowned for achieving an impressive monthly gross merchandise value (GMV) of ₦1 billion ($1.2 million) in November, has unveiled a significant strategic move.
The company has officially partnered with the retail giant Shoprite to expand its reach and redefine the grocery industry landscape.
Kennedy Ofor, Chowdeck’s Head of Business/Sales, announced the collaboration via a post on his social media page, expressing excitement about including Shoprite in their grocery chain list.
This partnership allows Chowdeck to offer Shoprite’s extensive product selection through its platform in major cities such as Lagos, Ibadan, Abuja, and Port-Harcourt, with plans for further expansion.
Chowdeck, a Y Combinator-backed Nigerian food delivery startup founded by Femi Aluko, Olumide Ojo (CTO), and Lanre Yusuf (COO) in October 2021, has rapidly become a force in the food delivery scene, to which Bolt had announced it will no longer continue this aspect of its business just to streamline its resources and maximise its overall efficiency.
With over 300,000 users and an average of 60,000 monthly users, the platform serves five cities, including Lagos and Abuja.
This collaboration represents a significant shift for Chowdeck, venturing beyond restaurant meal deliveries into the grocery realm.
Shoprite, a household name synonymous with grocery shopping in Nigeria, brings its vast network of stores and product ranges to complement Chowdeck’s efficient delivery system.
Kennedy Ofor highlighted that Chowdeck is now positioned as a one-stop shop with over 11,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs) available on their platform, catering to every grocery need.
The move aligns with Chowdeck’s mission to provide unparalleled convenience, wider product choices, faster delivery, and an enhanced online shopping experience for its users.
Observers across social media platforms have commented on the strategic significance of this partnership. Some noted the speed at which Chowdeck responded to customer feedback, turning a suggestion into a reality with the addition of Shoprite to their grocery chain list. Others recognised the broader trend in the digital delivery sector, emphasising the value of diversification.
As this collaboration unfolds, Chowdeck aims to redefine the grocery shopping experience in Nigeria, leveraging Shoprite’s reputation and extending its reach to provide efficient and convenient grocery deliveries to consumers across multiple cities.
The partnership is seen as a game-changer in the industry, showcasing the power of collaboration and the potential to reshape how Nigerians meet their everyday shopping needs.
