Even though Apple’s watch was launched in April 2015, a report by Juniper Research states that it accounted for over half of the smartwatch sales in 2015. Its rival, Android Wear shipments comprised less than 10% of sales for the year.
The report also adds that Samsung’s Tizen-based Gear S2 has not achieved strong sales volumes since it launched in November despite being well received. Most other smartwatch sales are currently coming from cheaper, simpler devices from a range of smaller players, such as Martian, X and Razer, the latter with the recently-announced Nabu Watch.
The report claims that Apple shipped 51.5% of the smartwatches in all markets around the world in 2015. It also estimates that roughly 17.1 million smartwatches were sold worldwide thereby bringing number sold by Apple to 8.8 million watches.
* The report doesn’t include wearables like the FitBit. For the purpose of this report, Juniper Research defines a smartwatch as a “wrist-based wearable that emulates traditional watch form factors, as well as providing additional digital functionality.”
