Engaging in groundbreaking projects is not something that is alien to Uber. It is testing self-driving or autonomous cars. You are already aware of this. But, there is a new one.
Jeff Holden, the Chief Product Officer at Uber Technologies announced that the company is researching into small planes that can Vertically Take Off and Land (VTOL) so they can be used for long haul flights in cities.
He said: “The concept behind the program is to allow Uber offer customers a variety of options to navigate and believes that VTOL aircraft will be commercially available within the next 10 years.”
Holden concluded by saying: “VTOL planes could potentially be a smart way to bypass traffic hiccups because they don’t require a long runway like a traditional aircraft.”
However, Uber is not the only organization researching into air taxi as Airbus and The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have declared their intention to explore the possibilities in air taxi.
This would be an exciting news for Lagosians as the city grapples with horrific traffic which is key to becoming a cosmopolitan city. Perhaps, the air taxis is what the Lagos State government should be looking at rather than cable cars.
