Twitter is rolling out a feature that allows users to change the speed at which videos are played on the platform. In the announcement on Wednesday, the social networking site revealed that it is currently testing new video-playback speed options on the web version as well as on the Android app.
An Engadget report claims that some Android users in France can see a small gear (next to the closed caption option) that lets them change the speed of videos. This allows you to select from “a fairly granular range of speeds with sound pitch adjusted so you don’t get the “Chipmunks” effect”. Of course, it is helpful for users who have short attention spans or need to reduce the speed of any video to hear a word. Eventually, it might be available to all users, although it is currently available to only a small number.
As you can see in my screenshot above, the feature allows the video’s speed to increase by 2.0 times or slow down by 0.25 times, enabling users to watch videos in a variety of ways. I tried watching a video on my Twitter app and discovered the company had granted access to my Samsung Galaxy A03s. However, Twitter says it’s yet to be released to iPhone and iPad users.
According to Twitter spokesperson Joseph Nuñez, users will be able to pick your playback speed on “Tweet Videos, Amplify Videos, Voice Tweets, videos in DMs, and Video Live Replays, depending on their platform.” Nuñez also said that Twitter plans to expand the test to iOS in the future. Only a few people have access to the beta version, and it’s not clear when it will be rolled out to all Twitter users.
Recently, the social networking site introduced a feature that allows users to downvote replies in tweets to a global audience. The feature was first tried out with some iOS users last year. Twitter said that giving people the option to downvote replies is a way to figure out what kinds of replies people find important in a conversation. Note that, unlike on Reddit, downvotes will not be displayed for everyone to see. Reddit allows both “upvotes” and “downvotes” to be seen by the platform users so that everyone can see if the public likes or dislikes a comment.
