Zoom in the early hours of today experienced an outage in selected regions globally. Many users of the video conferencing platform reported issues relating to hosting and joining meetings. The company, on the other hand, is investigating the incident according to its status page.
The company while giving an update before 10 AM ET said, “Our team is investigating the root cause of issues joining Zoom Meetings. These issues appear to be limited to a subset of users,” according to an update just before 10 AM ET (03.00 PM WAT).
According to reports, users in the UK and Nigeria were the first to notice widespread outages earlier today, although free accounts appeared to be functioning normally. Some churches have started using Zoom to hold virtual Sunday services during the coronavirus pandemic.
It is no news that the videoconferencing service has experienced a great surge during the pandemic and also and spotlighted the platform’s security issues, from “Zoombombing” by trolls to an issue with Zoom’s “Company Directory” setting that could leak user emails and photos.
However the company has been doing a lot to address these security concerns. It recently rolled out a new Zoom 5.0 update to address some of the many complaints and it acquired Keybase, an encrypted messaging app to cover up for one of the major security concerns that have been raised in the past months
The company had since not come out with an update as to the extent of the outage or the cause of it.
Update: Innovation Village received a response from Zoom as shown below. The company said that “Zoom users impacted by this issue should now be able to host, join & participate in Meetings & Webinars if they restart their sessions. We continue to assess & monitor. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused.”
