This innovative feature is slated for release as part of Zoom’s ambitious AI expansion project, targeted for early 2025, with the goal of revolutionizing virtual team communication.
The introduction of AI avatars will allow users to record and dispatch short video messages, thereby adding a new dimension of flexibility to remote work. To craft an avatar, users will be required to capture a brief video clip of themselves. Zoom’s AI technology will then analyze this footage to create a digital twin that mirrors the user’s appearance and voice accurately.
These digital avatars are designed to convey messages, offering users the unique advantage of managing tasks simultaneously in different settings, thus enhancing productivity and multitasking capabilities. Initially, this feature will be integrated into Zoom’s Clips function, which is tailored for concise updates, rather than being available for live, extended meetings.
Addressing potential concerns related to deepfakes and the misuse of avatars, Zoom’s Chief Product Officer, Smita Hashim, has emphasized the company’s commitment to security. Measures such as sophisticated authentication protocols, watermarking techniques, and stringent policy guidelines are being put in place to ensure transparency and minimize the security risks associated with AI-generated avatars.
This feature will be a component of the AI Companion add-on, which will be accessible for an additional fee of $12 per month. Users holding paid Zoom accounts without this add-on will still have the option to use pre-designed AI avatars and voices, albeit without the customization feature.
Zoom’s CEO, Eric Yuan, has expressed his enthusiasm for this innovative venture. In a recent interview, he highlighted the potential of AI avatars to represent users in meetings or handle emails, thereby freeing up time for other activities.
