Zimbabwean Startup, Road Rules, aimed at educating drivers about Zimbabwe’s highway laws, has won the Southern African leg of Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL) Boostcamp challenge.
Road Rules wins a 5000 Euros cash prize and a place at HiiL’s Justice Entrepreneur School (JES) in The Hague this December. The JES is a specialist business accelerator designed to aid justice innovations.
Road Rules will be joined at JES by Lady Liberty, a mobile legal office which enables lawyers to visit remote areas and offer assistance around family law issues.
Road Rules and Lady Liberty were two of seven startups from South Africa and Zimbabwe who pitched their innovations to a panel of judges at the Innovating Justice Boostcamp held recently, in front of an audience including South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, John Jeffery and Dutch Ambassador to South Africa, Marisa Gerards.
A number of regional semi-finalists will also receive extra financial and logistic support from HiiL.
Head of the HiiL Justice Accelerator, Wilfried de Wever said: “We’ve been highly impressed with the quality of justice innovations that have come out of the Southern Africa region over the last year. Road Rules and Lady Liberty are two of the strongest startups we’ve seen globally. All of our semi-finalists are exceptional, however, and we hope to be able to increase our activity in the area to provide more entrepreneurs with more support and the tools they need to bring justice to all in the future.”
