Zimbabwe: Social media reacts to Robert Mugabe’s resignation

Social Media is agog with the breaking news that Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has tendered his resignation. His resignation letter was received by the Parliament which had started impeachment proceedings this morning.

The impeachment proceedings was put in motion yesterday when the President did not announce his resignation in a televised broadcast on Sunday, 19th of November.

The 93 year old President was widely expected to announce his resignation but defied expectations by saying that he would be around to preside over a ruling ZANU-PF party congress next month.

Upon receipt of the resignation letter from Robert Mugabe, the impeachments abruptly came to an end.

A new President, most likely former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa, would be sworn in on Wednesday, 22nd of November.

Robert Mugabe ruled the country for 37 years. He had been under pressure to resign following a surprise military takeover earlier this week.

Here are some of the reactions on social media.
