YouTube Music’s latest feature is transforming how we find songs. Now, you can simply hum a tune into your Android phone, and the app will work its magic – like having a song detective in your pocket! This follows YouTube’s August announcement in a blog post that it would be testing a new app feature on Android phones, allowing users to search for a song by humming or recording it for over three seconds.
How It Works
- Open YouTube Music: Launch the app on your Android device.
- Tap the Search Bar: Locate the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner and tap it.
- Look for the Waveform Icon: Next to the microphone icon (used for voice search), you’ll now see a new waveform icon. Tap this.
- Hum, Sing, or Whistle: The app will prompt you to hum, sing, or even whistle the melody of the song you’re trying to identify.
- Let the AI Do Its Thing: YouTube Music’s advanced AI will analyze your input and compare it against its vast library of songs.
- Discover Your Song: If a match is found, you’ll be presented with the song’s full details and the option to play it or save it to your library.
While this feature isn’t entirely new (Google Assistant has had similar functionality for years), it’s faster and more integrated into the YouTube Music experience. In tests, it quickly identified recordings and even recognised most hummed, sung, or whistled tunes.
Of course, no technology is perfect. The app did have some amusing misses when presented with obscure songs or challenging melodies. However, its overall speed and accuracy make it a promising competitor to other music identification apps like Shazam.
This exciting new feature is currently rolling out to Android users. If you don’t see it yet, keep your YouTube Music app updated, and it should appear soon.
YouTube Music’s hum-to-search feature is a fun and innovative way to rediscover forgotten songs or identify catchy tunes you hear in passing. It’s a testament to how AI is continually enhancing our musical experiences. So, next time a melody gets stuck in your head, don’t fret – just hum it into your Android and let YouTube Music do the rest!
