    YouTube lowers eligibility criteria for its monetization program

    YouTube is lowering the eligibility criteria for its monetization program under the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Hitherto, you had to have 1000 subscribers and either 4,000 watch hours in the past year or 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days to qualify for monetization.

    The new conditions for qualification are as follows:

    • Having 500 subscribers;
    • 3 public uploads in the last 90 days;
    • and either 3,000 watch hours in the past year or 3 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.

    Launched in 2007, the YouTube Partner program is a comprehensive partner program available to Creators, delivering support, monetization opportunities and more. It is Google’s way of helping content creators earn money from their videos. It expanded to Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and Uganda in 2013.

    “Now we’re expanding the program by introducing earlier access to YPP with lower eligibility criteria that will help you start earning on YouTube sooner by opening up access to fan funding features like channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, and more. We’re also introducing an update to our YouTube Shopping affiliate program for creators who are further along in their journey!”

    Amjad Hanif, Vice President of Creator Products, YouTube

    According to Amjad Hanif, YouTube’s Vice president of Creator Products in a blog post, YouTube is applying this new eligibility criteria in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Taiwan, and South Korea. It will later roll it out to other countries where YPP is available.

    As content creators continue to expand their channel, they will become automatically eligible to earn revenue from ads and gain additional benefits when they meet the current eligibility criteria for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). They will not be required to reapply for the full YPP application process. The existing requirements to qualify for revenue sharing will remain the same.

    YouTube is consistently looking for ways to attract and retain creators to use its platform as competitors such as TikTok are also trying to lure creators to their own platform. YouTube recently launched ‘Creator Music’ to help content creators who are part of the YouTube Partner Program to use music in their videos while still being able to make money.

    However it is critical to note that TikTok recently lowered the bar for having access to creator monetization features. It expanded access to its video paywall feature, known as Series. Initially, this feature was limited to creators with over 10,000 followers. However, the company has now extended the opportunity to users with 1,000 followers who meet additional criteria, allowing them to apply for participation in the program. With Series, creators are empowered to offer exclusive premium content that fans can access by making a payment.
