Opera Mini announced that you can transfer files between devices without an internet connection using its offline file sharing feature. This new feature is expected to save on data costs.
This is the first major browser to introduce this feature.
To do this, Opera Mini creates a secure private network connection between devices via a direct Wi-Fi connection. Wi-Fi Direct, initially called Wi-Fi P2P(Peer to Peer), is a Wi-Fi standard enabling devices to easily connect with each other without requiring a wireless access point.
This file transfer feature is said to be 200 times faster than Bluetooth.
To start sharing files with friends and family, you need to access file sharing in your browser settings. Once there, tap Send in order to share or Receive to get a file from the second device. Opera Mini will provide a QR code which can be scanned by the receiving device to easily establish a connection.
This feature complements the popular data compression mode in the Opera Mini browser, thereby saving even more megabytes by sharing files offline.
Opera Mini is available to download and use for free from the Google Play Store.
