Yango launches ‘Cargo Express’ to improve delivery of large items across Africa

Yango Delivery, an African logistics startup specializing in urban service delivery, has launched a new feature called Cargo Express aimed at enhancing the delivery of large and oversized items across the continent. The introduction of this feature is aimed at resolving prevalent issues in the logistics sector, including unclear pricing and operational inefficiencies.

Initially, this feature will be operational in key metropolitan areas including Accra, Abidjan, and Lusaka. Notable advantages offered for customers include assistance with moving items and the provision of ten minutes of gratis loading and unloading time resulting in a more streamlined service.

Accessible via the Delivery section of the Yango app, Cargo Express provides access to a fleet of vehicles designed for the transport of large and heavy items.

Another innovative feature is the transparent and upfront pricing system, ensuring customers are only charged at the rate presented at the time of order placement. Customers can also actively monitor the progress of their deliveries using the in-app map provided by Yango, and push notifications will keep them informed about the status of their delivery at every phase.

Ireoluwa Obatoki, who holds the position of Head of Business Development for Africa at Yango Delivery, has commented on the introduction of the Cargo Express feature. He states that this launch is indicative of the company’s dedication to utilize technology-based solutions to significantly enhance the quality of service in urban delivery operations.

The launch of Cargo Express also opens up new income opportunities for local partners and couriers affiliated with logistics companies, while guaranteeing transparency in pricing within Africa’s delivery market.

Obatoki further elucidated the motivation behind the introduction of Cargo Express, stating, “The increasing trend of online shopping has highlighted the necessity for reliable delivery services capable of handling bulky items. Cargo Express has been designed to address this need, providing a dependable and uncomplicated solution.”

This new feature supplements the comprehensive range of services currently provided by Yango. The platform offers ridesharing services (Yango), motorbike delivery for light packages (Yango Delivery), and food delivery provisions (Yango Deli), collectively providing a diverse array of day-to-day services consolidated within a single application.

In December 2023, Yango formed a partnership with telecommunications giant MTN with the aim to enhance the working conditions of its affiliated drivers. The partnership led to the provision of free data packages for drivers, facilitating their digital connectivity.

A few months later, in February 2024, the company responded to economic pressures by raising its ride-hailing fares by 23%, asserting that the increase was put in place to support drivers and alleviate financial hardships. This move was seen as a way to create a more favourable platform for the drivers, potentially improving their standard of living.
