Xiaomi has continued in its trend of minimising the bezel in its new offering – the Mi Mix 2. It claims it has trimmed the lower border of the smartphone down by a significant 12 percent over the first iteration, the Mi Mix launched in October 2016.
It has minimized the bezel in exchange for a maximum front screen size. The only noticeable bezel rim is the chin, where the front selfie camera is situated.
Designed by world-renowned designer and Mi MIX industrial designer, Philippe Starck, Mi MIX is when modern day minimalist design meets traditional ceramic craftsmanship. Xiaomi selected micro-crystalline zirconia ceramic as the raw material with a hardness similar to sapphire.
Xiaomi stripped away what traditionally used to exist on the front – the earpiece, speaker, and infrared proximity sensor. It also redesigned a front-facing camera that is 50% smaller than typical ones, reengineered a 17:9 display ratio with rounded corners for full content viewing experience, even when soft keys are used.
Having a small display of 5.99″ compared to its predecessor with 6.4″, it is also shorter (151.8 mm long) and 75.5 mm wide (narrower).
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 sports a 12MP, f/2.0 aperture rear camera and a 5MP front camera.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 comes with an Android 7.1 (Nougat) and packs a powerful Snapdragon 821 processor, up to 6GB RAM and 64GB/128GB/256GB ROM. There’s also a special edition which has a ceramic unibody, with 8GB of RAM but with just 128GB of storage.
The smartphone has a non-removable 3400 Li-Ion mAh battery and it is available in two colours – Black and white
The Mi Mix 2 ranges from 3,299 yuan (64GB; about $510) to 3,999 yuan (256GB; about $610), whereas the MIX 2 Special Edition jumps to 4,699 yuan (about $720). The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 will be available in China on September 15 while the special edition variant will be available in October.
Xiaomi also launched another device today, the Mi Note 3, alongside the Mi Mix 2.
The Mi Note 3 has a 5.5′ display with a Snapdragon 660 processor, 3,500 mAh battery and 6GB RAM. It has a 12MP dual camera lens arrangement for the rear camera and a 16-megapixel front selfie camera.
The new Mi Note comes in at 2499 RMB ($383) for 64 GB, 2899 RMB ($445) for 128 GB and 2999 RMB ($460) for 128 GB.
This is the third smartphone from Xiaomi in the last couple of days, having launched the Xiaomi Mi A1 last week. And all these are ahead of Apple’s iPhone launch tomorrow, September 12.
