Xiaomi recently overtook Apple to take the second largest smartphone market share in the world in Canalys’ Q2 2021 report. The tracking company has now updated this report to show that the Chinese Brand is indeed closer to beating Samsung.
According to the updated report, Samsung still ranks first with 58 million phones shipped and maintains 18% of the market. This report also confirms that Xiaomi is strengthening its second position with shipments worth 52.8 million units in the second quarter. This is 17% of the market which proves Xiaomi is closely behind Samsung by 1% compared to 2% in the original report.
Does this mean Xiaomi could emerge as the leader of the smartphone market in the third quarter of 2021? Well, the company’s annual growth rate (83%) is much higher than that of Samsung (8%) and the other top five phone manufacturers. However, the Korean company is geared towards launching the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 and has high hopes that these devices would salvage the situation. This might not be the case as the two phones are not volume-driven.
However, Xiaomi’s entry into new markets and the value-driven Redmi lineup allow the brand to take the lead. A potential bottleneck for Xiaomi is the industry-wide chip shortage, which has forced some brands to ditch their phones or restrict their marketing to specific markets.
Apple, on the other hand, came in third with a market share of 14% and sold 45.7 million units. Oppo (10%) and Vivo (10%) entered the top five, selling 32.6 million and 31.2 million units, respectively. Do you think Xiaomi can overtake Samsung? Let us know in the comments.
