X (Twitter) said it is collecting users’ biometrics, job, and education information. The social networking site updated its policies to include biometric data as well as the user’s employment and educational background.
The company did not specify what it considers to be biometric data, but it is possible that it will collect information about faces, eyes, and fingerprints. The platform’s new privacy statement states that “we may collect and use your biometric information for safety, security, and identification purposes,” with your consent.
It’s also unclear how X will collect the biometric data or how it may be used.
I do not recall providing X (then Twitter) with my biometric data when I created my account on the platform in April 2011. However, I have recently noticed an increase in security checks on the platform. For example, when I attempted to create a new account, I was required to complete a five-step verification process to confirm that I was a real person. This morning, I also received a security check when I tried to change an adjective in my profile name.
So it is possible the company wants to keep maintaining a ‘secured’ platform to prevent bots and spammy activities.
While the new biometric requirement is for identification, X will use user-provided information on their employment and educational background to offer jobs that they believe they are qualified for. X has launched a new feature that rivals LinkedIn. This feature allows verified organisations to showcase pivotal roles on their profiles, reaching out to millions of potential candidates organically.
