Elon Musk’s social network, X, is introducing a feature for audio and video calls from within the app to its Android client. According to a post by an X engineer working on the project, this feature will be accessible once the Android users perform an app update.
In August 2023, CEO Linda Yaccarino hinted at introducing video calls on the X platform, with the feature being rolled out to iOS users by October. Interestingly, while all users are able to receive calls, only paid users can initiate them. This is part of an extensive list of features exclusive to paid users on X.
An earlier feature that allowed premium users to set an NFT as their profile picture was withdrawn earlier this month.
Users can control their call settings by going to: “Settingle > Privacy and safety > Direct Messages > Enable audio and video calling”. They can also decide who can call them – people in their contacts, people they follow, and verified users. Multiple selections can be made from these options.
Despite some setbacks, X remains committed to its vision of becoming an “everything app”. The company recently announced its 2024 vision, which includes the introduction of peer-to-peer payment, new xAI-powered features such as “show dissimilar posts”, and additional ad products for marketers.
However, X has faced some challenges. Reports indicate that advertisers are moving away from X to platforms like LinkedIn after Musk’s pointed comment at a November 2023 event telling them to “Go f*ck yourself.”
