On August 9th, 1956, a significant event unfolded as more than 20,000 women from various racial backgrounds marched to Pretoria’s Union Buildings in South Africa. Their purpose was to protest against the legislation that mandated African women to carry passbooks. This act of courage kindled a flame that would spread throughout the continent.
Today, as South Africa observes Women’s Month, Google honours the spirit of resilience and defiance that emerged from that historic moment, exemplifying the strength of women. It spotlights pioneering women who are harnessing technology’s potential to redefine boundaries in various sectors and communities across Africa. Their endeavours showcase the profound impact of technology on the continent’s future.
Statistics reveal that 58% of businesses in Africa are led by women. These enterprises span a wide spectrum of industries, leaving their mark on everything from sustainable fashion in Kenya to disrupting Cameroon’s insurance sector and driving innovation in Kenya’s logistics landscape.
Earlier this year, Google introduced two significant initiatives: the Google for Startups Accelerator: Women Founders in Africa and the Hustle Academy for women entrepreneurs. These programs provided vital support to women-led SMEs, offering mentorship, access to investors, technical workshops, and training. Together, they have nurtured an empowering ecosystem for women in business.
In celebration of South Africa’s Women’s Month, Google has dropped the #WomeninIT video series. This collection features six extraordinary women who are shattering barriers in their respective fields through the strategic use of technology. They are as follows:
- Balqis Chepkwony, revolutionising Kenya’s logistics industry with Fleetsimplify.
- Colleen Flowers, combining sustainability with gourmet tastes in South Africa with Colleen’s Handmade Sauces
- Evelyn Karimi, creating sustainable fashion with Wika Leathers in Kenya.
- Mobolaji Olamide Jaji, transforming Nigeria’s fashion industry with O’lam Creations and empowering women.
- Naledi Magowe, bridging the digital divide in Botswana with Brastorne Enterprises.
- Virginie Pouna Siewe, reshaping the insurance industry in Cameroon with COVA Africa.
According to Dorothy Ooko, Head of Communications & Public Affairs, Google, Africa:
“This Women’s Month, we draw inspiration from the words of Malala Yousafzai, who said, ‘We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.’ The women featured in the #WomeninIT series embody this spirit as they push boundaries and challenge norms within their industries. Their resilience, innovation, and audacity extend beyond their personal achievements, sparking progress that benefits us all.”
