In partnership with Devnaija Academy Limited, Women Connect has successfully trained more than 100 young girls in Lagos, with the aim of encouraging their exploration and excellence in a technology-driven world.
The training sessions, conducted both in physical and virtual formats, attracted girls ranging from 7 to 16 years old and were organized as part of the activities commemorating the 2023 International Day of the Girl Child.
During the event, Oyinlola Sale, the Executive Director of Women Connect, shared that the participants received training in coding and robotics. She emphasised the significance of the event, as it provided these girls with the opportunity to embrace skills that are increasingly important in today’s world.
Oyinlola encouraged parents to stay informed about the latest developments in the world to better support the education of their daughters. Additionally, she called upon governments at all levels to safeguard the rights of the girl child within society.
The CEO of Devnaija Academy Limited, Ogunbiyi Elizabeth, also spoke about the program’s purpose, emphasizing its goal to empower and inspire young girls by introducing them to the world of coding and robotics. In her words, “We believe that every girl deserves the opportunity to explore and excel in this technologically driven world.”
Regarding improving the academic development of the girl child, she suggested that the government could implement various measures and policies to ensure equal access, opportunities, and a conducive learning environment.
This includes building and maintaining schools, providing transportation, and removing barriers that hinder girls’ attendance and participation. Furthermore, she recommended offering scholarships, grants, and financial incentives to encourage enrollment and continued education, especially for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.
As for the impact of the digital age on young individuals, she acknowledged both positive advancements and challenges. On the positive side, the digital age has provided access to information, knowledge, educational resources, and innovative learning methods.
Young people can now explore various subjects, cultures, and ideas, promoting a global perspective. It has also enhanced communication, connectivity, and tailored learning experiences through interactive apps, e-learning platforms, and educational games.
Enumerating the challenges and negative impact of digital technology, she pointed out issues such as digital addiction and overuse, cyberbullying, online harassment, and the spread of fake news, which can misguide and misinform young individuals.
To address these challenges, she emphasised the importance of teaching critical thinking and media literacy to navigate the digital landscape effectively.
