WhatsApp wants to crash the “Traditional BlueTooth Style” of Scanning a QR Code to Connect to WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp is reportedly testing an alternative method that allows users to link the mobile chat app to WhatsApp Web on a laptop without having to scan the QR Code. According to WABetaInfo, this process involves users entering an eight-digit verification code that is sent to their phones.

Introducing the new “Link with Phone Number” option, users can now connect a device using their primary account phone number and a one-time code generated by WhatsApp Web. To link a device to your WhatsApp account, simply open WhatsApp Web on the desktop device you wish to connect and select the innovative “Link with Phone Number” option. After entering your phone number and country details, you will receive a notification with an 8-character code. Enter this code into WhatsApp to complete the process.

WhatsApp continues to enhance its platform with improved multi-device support, enabling users to use the same account on two devices. Personally, I believe the current method of scanning a QR code to set up WhatsApp on a secondary device is a manual process. As it requires physically lifting one device and bringing it in proximity to another, just like the traditional Bluetooth connection model. And what if your phone’s camera is in bad shape? It becomes impossible to set up WhatsApp on any other device, as there is no alternative method to log into a companion device.

Therefore, WhatsApp users should view the introduction of an option to enter a code sent via SMS or email as a positive step towards a seamless and more digital linking process. Given that we are in the technology era, such improvements are certainly welcome.

As with previous updates, this new option is now accessible to select beta testers who install the latest WhatsApp beta for Android from the Google Play Store. Over the next few days, more users will have the opportunity to enjoy this feature.

Notably, WABetaInfo’s report highlights that this particular functionality is currently compatible exclusively with WhatsApp Web. Hence, at present, it’s not yet possible to link your WhatsApp account to a secondary mobile device solely using your phone number.

Does this End-to-End encryption really protect our messages on WhatsApp?
