Fresh from its acquisition by Facebook, Whatsapp is planning to offer free voice calling later this year, so says CEO and Co-Founder Jan Koum.
Jan mentioned this at the during a presentation at Mobile World Congress 2014 currently taking place at Barcelona.
According to New York Times, Jan Koum said users in the second quarter would be able to make Internet calls through their smartphones similar to services that are already available on rival Internet messaging offerings like Kakao of South Korea and Viber of Cyprus. He also added that WhatsApp’s voice service is expected to be available first on Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS operating systems, then expand to others like Windows Phone and Blackberry.
During the talk, Koum also revealed that WhatsApp now has 465 million users, up from around 450 million users just last week. This includes more than 40 million users in India, 38 million in Brazil, and also 31 million users in Germany. The number of users in America was not revealed.
