Are you having trouble accessing WhatsApp? You’re not alone. The messaging app appears to be suffering an outage that’s having an impact on users around the world.
Down Detector, which tracks outages for all kinds of websites and apps, has received over 40,000 reports of WhatsApp being down as of 4:45 p.m. ET (10 PM CAT). It’s not clear at this time what has caused the outage, nor when the app will be available again.
The messaging platform acknowledged the outage on Wednesday in a tweet.
Meta’s business website confirms the outage, which it identifies as a “major disruption.” The company adds: “We will provide another update within 1 hour or sooner if additional information is available.”
Meta also confirmed that WhatsApp Business, the company’s merchants-focused service, is also facing an outage. “We are currently experiencing some disruption impacting Business’ Display Names on WhatsApp Business API. This issue started on July 13th, 12:14 PM UTC. Our engineering teams are investigating the issue,” the company says on the reliability website.
Many people tweeted about the WhatsApp outage on Wednesday evening, with some making jokes about how they needed to use another social media service to find out what was happening with the platform.
