Whatsapp has introduced a new feature, “Message Yourself”, that allows users open a chat with their own phone number right within their contacts list.
The new update, which is now gradually being released was previously tested with some beta testers. WABetaInfo has now confirmed it is on the App Store for iOS with the build number is 22.23.74, and Android on the WhatsApp version 2.22.23.77.
The instant-messaging service is giving users the ability to DM themselves, and according to WABetaInfo, “Messages sent to yourself will be visible on all of your linked devices, and they are end-to-end encrypted.”
Messaging yourself on WhatsApp works similarly to starting any other chat on the app. To start a chat with yourself, follow these steps:
- Open WhatsApp on your main Chats tab.
- Tap the new chat icon on the bottom right of the screen.
- At the top of the list of contacts, you will see your name with the text Message yourself under it. Select your profile to open a new chat.
- A chat window will open just like a regular chat. Here you can type and send messages to yourself.
This might seem like a new feature for most people, but I, personally, have had to message myself using the app’s “click to chat” feature. However, it reduces the need for users having to use the wa.me URL to DM themselves.
You can also pin your self-chat messages to the top of the list if you wish.
The self-DM feature is a convenient way to have information close at hand, alongside all of your other WhatsApp chats.
Whatsapp rival, Telegram has a similar feature called Saved Messages that lets users bookmark any important messages as well as save their notes and reminders that can be accessed in the future.
Messages once saved can be accessed from the top of the chats screen. However, Telegram users initially need to access the feature by tapping the hamburger menu on Android or through the settings menu on iOS.
Many WhatsApp users experienced a massive outage on October 25th to which ty could neither send nor receive messages. Even the voice note or message feature was affected, as it slowed down the operation of some small businesses which depended on the instant-messaging platform.
The Meta-owned app also announced the global release of its WhatsApp Communities, a new feature on the app which allows users to create larger, more organised discussion groups.
WhatsApp Communities would help various organisations, from a school to a business whose employees communicate on WhatsApp, organise discussions and have their admins message everyone across different groups.
