WhatsApp introduces new feature to check misinformation: Search the web

WhatsApp, Facebook owned instant messaging platform, has introduced a new feature called “Search the web”, to confirm if a message received on the app is true by quickly finding the information about the message from the web. This is yet another measure to curb the dissemination of fake news.

To confirm the received message, one is required to tap the magnifying glass button to search for information about the link.

The new feature has been rolled out to select markets including Brazil, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, UK, and US.

In a bid to reduce the spread of fake news during this coronavirus pandemic, WhatsApp, in April this year, introduced a limit so that messages can only be forwarded to one chat at a time. This means that when you receive a frequently forwarded message and it has been forwarded more than five times, you will only be able to send it to one person at a time.

This was a further restriction on the limit imposed last year where the users could only forward a message to five people.
