WhatsApp Introduces “Background Sync” for Web Version, Messages Sync Even When Browser Tab is Not Active

WhatsApp has just introduced an option called “background sync” in the web version. With this feature, messages are finally synced in the background, providing users with faster performance.

Prior to this update, users might have noticed that message synchronisation on WhatsApp Web required them to keep the browser tab open and active. However, with the introduction of “background sync,” this limitation has been overcome.

First spotted by WABetaInfo, the feature will allow messages to be automatically synchronised in the background, even when the browser tab is not actively being viewed. This means that users no longer need to keep the WhatsApp Web tab open at all times to ensure messages are up to date.

The implementation of “background sync” brings about faster performance on WhatsApp Web. Users can expect their conversations and chats to be consistently updated without the need for constant manual interaction. This improvement is particularly beneficial for individuals who rely on WhatsApp Web for communication throughout the day.

The Background Sync API permits authorised web applications to function without requiring a consistent internet connection. Instead, it enables these applications to delay network-related tasks until a reliable connection becomes accessible. This ensures that the operations can be carried out when the connection is stable.

In the previous month, we reported the Meta-Owned service was testing a new way for users to connect to WhatsApp Web on their laptop. This process eliminates the need to scan the QR code. Instead, users can input an eight-digit verification code sent to their phones as part of the process.

Here’s the process of linking a device to your WhatsApp account, broken down into steps:

    1. Open WhatsApp Web: On the desktop device you want to connect, launch a web browser and go to the WhatsApp Web platform.
    2. Choose “Link with Phone Number”: Within WhatsApp Web, look for the option labeled “Link with Phone Number.”
    3. Provide Phone Details: Enter your phone number along with the appropriate country details. Make sure the information is accurate to ensure a successful connection.
    4. Receive Code Notification: Shortly after entering your phone number, you will receive a notification on your phone. This notification will include an 8-character code.
    5. Enter Code in WhatsApp: On the desktop device, input the 8-character code received on your phone into the designated field within WhatsApp Web.
    6. Complete the Process: After entering the code, WhatsApp will finalise the linking process. Your desktop device will now be successfully linked to your WhatsApp account.

By introducing a new way to connect to your account, the Instant-Messaging Service wants to replace the traditional Bluetooth style of Scanning a QR Code to Connect to WhatsApp Web.
