How do you keep up with innovations in the social space? Every now and then, something new comes up and seems to upstage the incumbent.
I didn’t bother to look at Keek until I saw an article on Bella Naija “BN Presents 10 Celebrities YOU Should be Following on Keek” showing some of the African Celebrities that have taken to the new Phenomenon – Inyanya, Ice Prince, Yvonne Nelson, Don Jazzy and many more.
So what is Keek? According to Keek.com, it is “A revolutionary new way to discover the world and interact with others.” It aids you to “Create & watch fast, short video updates with your smartphone, tablet or laptop and share them with friends.” Techcrunch says it is the “the Twitter for video-based status updates”.
Wikipedia says “Keek is a free online social networking service that enables its users to upload video status updates, which are called “keeks”. Users can post keeks to the keek website using a webcam or via the Keek mobile apps for Android or iPhone. Users can also reply back with text or video comments, known as “keekbacks”, and share content to other major social media networks. There is also an embed option so users can embed their keeks into a blog or website”
For me, it is a longer version of Twitter’s Vine. Vine is just 6 seconds while Keek is 36 seconds.
It was released in March and has exploded in popularity in the ensuing months, receiving 250 million page views and 21 million visits in August alone. In 2013 Keek increased its user base by adding 6 million new users from December, 2012 through January, 2013. Keek is now seeing traffic at a rate of 1 billion monthly pageviews, 75 million monthly visits, 15 million monthly unique visitors, 4 million monthly user-generated videos, 30 million monthly “follows” and “subscribes”, and 8 million monthly comments and “likes”. There are 200,000 new users are joining the platform on a daily basis.
Hmmm… with these impressive figures, how will it compete with Twitter’s Vine? Or will someone else acquire it pretty soon?
Will I open a keek account? Not yet. Too many platforms… I will wait a bit. But You can try it for yourself.
