Key stakeholders from the West African oil and gas sector will gather at the La Palm Beach Hotel, Accra, Ghana from 27 – 29 October 2015 for the much-awaited West Africa Oil & Gas Talent Summit 2015.
The summit is joint organized by Human Leadership Resources (HLR) and Oil & Gas Soft Skills Ltd (OGS), West Africa’s leading brand in for top performance executive workforce development, the summit will serve as a key platform for exploring talent innovation for organisational and regional competitiveness and find strategies to thrive in turbulent times.
Although there are numerous conferences in the oil industry, they are mostly about technology and finance, which Africa does not have; the people issues are pushed to the side lines.
As oil prices continue to fall with no end in sight, some things are becoming clearer. For example, that prices are likely to stay low for much longer than initially speculated. The industry is seeing second and third rounds of cost cutting in a season. Survival is threatened, as technology and finance seem impotent to deliver corporate revival.
All eyes are turning to the “people” for survival. The people who can unravel the complexities and ambiguities; resilient and focused people who can chalk up innovative responses and implement same successfully. No better time to bring talent to the front burner!
Questions include: What changes should organisations make to their workforce development and performance practices? What competences will deliver corporate survival at $40 oil prices?
According to Emmanuel Emielu of OGS organisers of the summit, skills shortage is beyond numbers.
“The issue of skills gaps and shortages must not be seen only in terms of how to get more employment ready graduates into the workforce; it is beyond numbers. It is also in terms of how to get the workforce highly engaged and top performing. Without this balanced approach, it is like pouring precious fresh water into a leaking container. And this is perhaps more imperative now, as companies grapple with delivering business results with a reduced workforce, in the face of dwindling fortunes.”
