Wananchi Group owner of Pay Tv company Zuku, has invested $2 million to provide Kenyan schools with free access to the internet. This initiative, named WazEd, is done in conjunction with Kenya Education Network (KENET) and the County Government of Nairobi. It is supposed to cover 2,175 public and private schools in Nairobi County.
The project will supplement the government initiative to provide free laptops to schools across the country. It will also enable students conduct viable research and access massive knowledge from different parts of the world. The National Research and Education Network of Kenya will manage the Internet service and educational portal, including the registration of the .sc.ke domain names for the schools.
“The WazEd Nairobi Schools project shall also support teachers in connected by providing them high speed access to open educational content and online capacity building courses on new methods of teaching and learning with technology” said Prof Meoli Kashorda, the CEO of KENET.
The pilot for this initiative started in April 2014 and has since connected over 150 schools to fixed high speed internet.
In the first three months, the fibre network was rolled out and the last 12 months was used to assess the progress of the project.
