Wahu Mobility secures funding from Sahara Impact Ventures

Wahu Mobility’s story began with a simple yet powerful idea: converting traditional bicycles into electric-powered models to meet the growing demand for affordable, sustainable transportation across Africa. What started as a retrofit solution has evolved into a full-fledged mobility company that designs and assembles electric bicycles engineered specifically for Africa’s diverse and often challenging road conditions.

Beyond manufacturing, Wahu has introduced innovative leasing programs that make it easier for businesses to transition from petrol-powered fleets to clean, electric alternatives—helping reduce operational costs while cutting carbon emissions.

The company’s roots trace back to 2020 when impact-driven entrepreneur Valerie Labi founded Cargo Bikes Africa. This venture later merged with MANA Mobility and ultimately became Wahu Mobility. Valerie’s vision was shaped by a stark reality: in Ghana, both petrol and vehicles are prohibitively expensive.

We don’t produce vehicles; we import them. We’re always either getting second-hand vehicles from Europe, or we are walking. So that became my calling: to introduce new mobility solutions for both men and women.

Ghana’s rapid urbanization underscores the urgency of Wahu’s mission. The country’s population is projected to surge from 23 million in 2022 to 50 million by 2050, placing immense pressure on infrastructure, the economy, and the environment. Against this backdrop, Wahu is addressing multiple interconnected challenges: providing accessible transport, reducing emissions, and creating pathways for sustainable self-employment.

By combining local manufacturing with technology-driven fleet management and rider support, Wahu is not just building bikes—it’s building a cleaner, more inclusive future for African mobility.

In a statement, Sahara Impact Ventures emphasized the alignment between Wahu’s mission and its own investment philosophy:

At Sahara Impact Ventures, we focus on early-stage ventures tackling systemic challenges, and Wahu is a perfect example of that vision. With urban congestion intensifying, fuel prices soaring, and transport-related emissions projected to triple by 2050, the urgency for efficient, sustainable alternatives is undeniable. Wahu’s approach combines local manufacturing, advanced fleet management technology, and comprehensive rider support, delivering a smart, integrated solution for individuals and enterprises alike.
