Volvo to introduce two new electric models in South Africa by 2026

Swedish automaker Volvo Cars, owned by Chinese automotive giant Geely, is set to expand its electric vehicle (EV) portfolio in South Africa with the launch of two new models—the ES90 and EX60—in 2026. This move underscores Volvo’s commitment to electrification and its strategy to make premium EVs more accessible in emerging markets.

ES90: A New Benchmark in Electric Sedans

The ES90, scheduled for release in mid-to-late Q1 2026, represents a significant leap in Volvo’s EV technology. It will be the first Volvo model to feature 800-volt architecture, enabling faster charging times and extended driving range compared to previous models. Designed for versatility, safety, and cutting-edge technology, the ES90 combines the elegance of a sedan with the adaptability of a fastback, offering SUV-like ground clearance and a spacious interior.

Unveiled globally in March 2025, the ES90 is engineered to evolve over time through continuous over-the-air software updates, ensuring customers benefit from the latest innovations throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle.

EX60: Expanding Volvo’s Electric SUV Lineup

Following the ES90, Volvo will introduce the EX60 in mid-to-late Q3 2026, making South Africa one of the few markets outside the EU to receive this model. Positioned between the XC40 Recharge and flagship EX90, the EX60 aims to strengthen Volvo’s growing electric SUV portfolio.

The EX60 promises a significantly larger range than any previous Volvo EV and an enhanced user experience. It will officially debut in January 2026, signaling Volvo’s next chapter toward becoming a fully electric brand.

Grant Locke, Managing Director at Volvo Cars South Africa, commented:

The upcoming EX60 signals the next chapter in Volvo’s journey toward becoming a fully electric brand. As South Africa’s EV landscape continues to expand—with more charging points, growing awareness, and an appetite for premium electrification—the EX60 will arrive at the perfect time. It’s designed to bring our latest technology to a broader audience while delivering the range, confidence, and everyday practicality that local drivers expect.

In line with Volvo’s electrification strategy, existing models are being rebranded:

    • C40 → EC40
    • XC40 Recharge → EX40

    The new Volvo ES90

While South Africa still lags behind developed markets in EV adoption, growth is accelerating. Volvo’s EX30 has emerged as the nation’s best-selling EV, reflecting strong demand for premium electric mobility. Other global and Chinese brands are also making inroads:

    • BMW and Mercedes-Benz continue to expand their EV offerings.
    • GWM recently launched the electric ORA.
    • BYD, the world’s largest new-energy vehicle manufacturer, is aggressively expanding in South Africa with models like the Dolphin Surf (priced under R400,000), the Seal sedan, Sealion SUV, and Shark bakkie.

BYD is also investing heavily in charging infrastructure, planning 300 charging stations, including a 1MW ultra-fast charging hub. These will initially be installed at dealerships before rolling out to highways and urban centers. Additionally, BYD aims to expand solar-powered charging solutions, further supporting South Africa’s transition to sustainable mobility.
