Vivo has unveiled the X Fold, the company’s first foldable phone. The X Fold, like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series and its competitors, features a big 8.03-inch folding screen on the inside for tablet-style use and a more typical phone-sized display on the outside — in this case, 6.53 inches.
As with Samsung, Vivo’s folding display is protected by a layer of Schott’s Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), which should provide durability. According to GSMArena, the phone’s hinge enables it to fold flat or be propped open at angles ranging from 60 to 120 degrees. Android Authority reports Vivo boasts that the phone’s screen should withstand 300,000 folds, which appears to be a significant boost above Samsung’s most recent series of foldables’ reported 200,000 folds.
Apart from its folding capabilities, the Vivo X Fold features instantly identifiable flagship specifications. The smartphone has a built-in Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and is powered by a 4,600mAh battery that supports wireless charging at 50W or wired charging at 66W. Both of its panels feature a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and incorporate ultrasonic fingerprint scanners.
Again, Android Authority says the phone’s rear features four cameras: a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera, a 12-megapixel 2x telephoto camera, and an 8-megapixel 5x periscope camera. Both the inner and outer screens have 16-megapixel hole-punch selfie cameras.
Vivo is a subsidiary of the BBK supply chain conglomerate, including Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme. In December 2021, Oppo unveiled its first foldable phone, the Find N, with a little smaller screen than the Vivo X Fold. For the time being, these two gadgets are only available in China.
The 12GB RAM, 256GB storage edition of the Vivo X Fold will start at 8,999 (about $1,413). In addition, there is a 512GB storage model that costs 9,999 (approximately $1,570).
